Why I made this list

A few Decembers ago, I went to buy the long garland and the shelf was bare. So was the one for the tall slim tree. I took home whatever was left, and our porch looked half-dressed until the week of Christmas. I felt it every time I pulled into the driveway.

That winter I started writing the dates down: what sells out first, which week to buy it, which room it belongs in. I kept the notebook next to the kettle and ticked things off, one store trip at a time.
